While there have not been recalls for Royal Canin since 2007, there have been a large number of complaints against the company.

Use of By-Products

A 2013 publication by Royal Canin confirmed rumors that the company was replacing quality ingredients like chicken meal with chicken by-products. They have attempted to spin this as a quality source of nutrition in the publication here.  The publication is misleading in the compairson of chicken meal vs chicken by-product. Here is the official definition as provided by AFFCO.

AAFCO definition Chicken/Poultry Meal AAFCO definition Chicken/Poultry By-Product Meal
“Poultry Meal is the dry rendered product from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts of whole carcasses of poultry or a combination thereof, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails.” “Poultry By-Product Meal consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices.”

  1. Andrea beltran on

I changed my English Bulldogs food to Royal canine. I wish I would’ve read the reviews before switching. My poor sweet dog experienced the same symptoms other dogs and cats had. She was constipated then at the end had diarrhea. She passed away Monda the 23rd of November. I feel terrible and will always regret that decision. She would be here with me now had I been proactive. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS FOOD!!!

  2. Andrea, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. As a vet tech there are a number of reasons that your pet could have been ill, the least of which is dramatically switching foods, or the health sues that look just like food intolerance. I’ve fed all of my dogs this brand for many years, as well as done research into the brand. While they are not perfect, they do try very hard to help pets, with both regular and prescription diets, as well as doing palatability tests, and housing their taste testers in a facility that simulates a home environment, with great people who love the pets under their care.

  3. I used to buy this cat food for about 3 years, different flavors. I have never had a problem with this brand. This time I almost lost my cat.
He started to throw out every day after eating this food. I thought something got wrong with the cat, maybe he got sick.
I could never suspect this brand of wrong doing. Then I stopped this food and switched to Pride by Instinct, and he stopped throwing out.
I just not sure where I should report this problem because it looks that the food is contaminated with god knows what. Be careful.

  4. My dog was observed by me to have increased thirst, frequency urgency and nocturia on adult royal canin (I didn’t know source of sx.) but thought she had diabetes. Took her to vets. They prescribed Urinary SO and her symptoms worsened with outright incontinence at night. She had a ultrasound for stones (no stones found) but vet there suggested stopping royal canin urinary so. Her urinary symptoms stopped immediately and increased thirst has decreased. The only thing that changed was stopping royal canin urinary so.
